WFC Removes Top 10 Challenge from BBQ Competition
The World Food Championships organizing committee today announced that the Grand Champion from its barbecue division on Saturday, Nov 7, would advance directly to the Final Table at this year’s 2015 event in Kissimmee, FL.
Acknowledging that the BBQ competition is following the rigorous rules of the Kansas City Barbecue Association, the committee indicated that hosting a top 10 round of competition was no longer necessary.
“Historically, the BBQ World Championships were not fully sanctioned by the KCBS, so we used an additional Top 10 Round to make it consistent with the rest of the categories,” explained Mike McCloud, CEO of World Food Championships. “But the rigorous process of four turn-ins due to the KCBS sanctioning is about as tough as it gets in food sport. So we believe taking the Grand Champion from Saturday’s championship straight to the Final Table is the best process for barbecue.
McCloud noted that the top 10 overall finishers in barbeque would earn cash prizes, in addition to top finishers in the four categories of chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. The entire field, which will be capped at 100 teams this year, will also have a chance to earn additional prizes during the ancillary challenges on Thursday, Nov 5.
Unlike previous championships, this year’s World Food Championships is also holding an open registration for 50 spots in the barbeque field. Those teams selected and fully registered in the open registration will face 50 other teams who have earned their way through a golden ticket qualifier.
