UPDATE: Dozens of Teams to Compete in Memorial Day Weekend Barbecue Championship

Share:

Competition will be held at Brenau University in Gainesville, Ga.

UPDATED May 24 at 8:46 a.m. - The original report indicated a team from Dacula would take part in this weekend's competition. A Brenau University representative advised this morning that the team has dropped out of the competition due to family commitments.

Dozens of area barbecue teams will compete for two titles as well as two World Food Championship bids during the fifth annual Brenau Barbecue Championship scheduled for May 24-25.

The teams will vie for Memphis Barbecue Network (MBN) and the Georgia Barbecue Association (GBA) division titles. The division winners will earn an automatic bid to the World Food Championships in Las Vegas -- a bid potentially worth a piece of $300,000 in prize money.

The Brenau Barbecue Championship will kick off Friday, May 24, with a preview party from 6-10 p.m. Tickets to the preview are $10. The main event is Saturday, May 25, beginning at 10 a.m. Admission to Saturday's event is $5, children 10 and under are admitted free of charge.

Barbecue and other foods will be available for sale. The event will also feature live music, craft vendors, family-friendly activities and a car show expected to draw more than 100 classic cars.

The annual barbecue is a scholarship fundraising event for Brenau University.
